Description : La Motilla del Azuer is a prehistoric site from the Bronze Age , located in Spain , in the Castilian-La Mancha municipality of Daimiel , in the province of Ciudad Real . It was declared a site of cultural interest in the category of archaeological zone on June 20, 2013. The approval agreement was published on July 3, 2013 in the Official Gazette of Castilla-La Mancha . The archaeological sites known by the motillas toponym represent one of the most unique types of prehistoric settlement in the Iberian Peninsula . They occupy the La Mancha region during the Bronze Age between 2200 and 1500 BC. These are artificial mounds, 4 to 10 m high, the result of the destruction of a central plan fortification with several concentric walled lines. Its distribution in the La Mancha plain, with equidistance of 4 to 5 kilometers, affects river meadows and depressed areas where until recently the existence of lagoons and marsh areas was frequent. The special characteristics of this site, as well as the monumentality of its fortification structures, with masonry walls that retain more than 8 meters in height, give the Azuer settlement a relevant character within the Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula. 1 During the Bronze Age, these fortified settlements played an important role in managing and controlling economic resources. Inside its fortified enclosures, basic resources such as water were protected, captured from the water table through a well, and large-scale storage and processing of cereals, the occasional stabling of livestock, and the production of ceramics and other artisan products were carried out.
